2019 Grantees

2019 was a transition year for us.  We had a large backlog of applications carried over from our fall 2018 window, and we opened a new grant window in late 2019.  Also, as part of our continued emphasis on new groups seeking to establish themselves in their communities, in late 2019 we began offering our new First Steps Grants to young organizations that recognize the importance of business training and planning as well as passion for the animals to create a successful, long-term operation.  These First Steps grants are unrestricted for general use by the recipients who meet the criteria (See First Steps Grants).

For the full year 2019, The Binky Foundation awarded 44 “Forward Steps” grants to organizations in 23 states plus one territory (Puerto Rico) totaling over $56,500.  In addition, it awarded 6 of its new “First Steps” grants, for a total of all grants awarded in 2019 in excess of $62,500.

It is with great pride that we acknowledge each of our 2019 grant recipients.

2014 Grantees

Portable coral, Panhandle Equine Rescue, Florida.

Portable coral, Panhandle Equine Rescue, Florida.

2014 marked the first time in our ten years of providing grants that all grants were First Steps grants of $2500 or less, completing our evolution towards our smaller, more focused grants. This emphasis on smaller grants enabled us to provide meaningful long-term benefits to many more organizations. We received a total of 134 applications in 2014, including an overwhelming 88 applications received in our September window, and awarded 59 “First Steps” grants to recipients in 26 states. This almost doubled our 31 grants to organizations in 18 states in 2013.

Our amazing grantees in turn continue to remind us that the smallest efforts properly focused can become the seeds from which substantial efforts grow. So it is with great pride that we acknowledge, in alphabetical order, each of our 2014 grant recipients (an asterisk* marks those grantees who posted an acknowledgement of our grant on their websites. If we missed any, our apologies):

The Binky Foundation also awarded an additional 18 “First Steps” grants in 2014 with payment deferred to 2015. These grantees will be listed on the 2015 Our Grantees website page.

Our criteria and information on our application windows for 2015 can be found on our Grant Program page.

2013 Grantees

In 2013 The Binky Foundation continued to focus on its smaller First Steps grants (up to $2500).  This emphasis on smaller grants enabled us to provide meaningful long-term benefits to many more organizations, and our grantees in turn continue to remind us that the smallest efforts properly focused can become the seeds from which substantial efforts grow.  So it is with great pride that we acknowledge each of our 2013 grant recipients (Our criteria and information on our application windows for 2014 can be found on our Grant Program page).

First Step Grants

During 2013, First Steps grants were awarded to 30 organizations and 2 individuals in a record 18 states. These grants largely reflect our mission and criteria as described on our Grant Program page:

Forward Steps Grants

Although The Binky Foundation is focused primarily on its First Steps grant program, it also provided support in 2013 for a few larger Forward Steps programs (between $2500 and $5000) that our grant committee determined would provide long-term, valuable benefits for animals or habitat, including:

The Binky Foundation also continues to provide ongoing support for a couple of “old friends”—organizations that provide significant and important services to animals—domestic and wild—and their habitat, including grants to:

  • Unexpected Wildlife Refuge, a small refuge in Southern New Jersey providing a haven for beavers, other indigenous wildlife and migratory birds, protecting them from encroachments of farmers, hunters and civilized development.
  • The Raptor Trust, an organization in Central New Jersey providing for the rehabilitation and re-entry in to the wild of injured or orphaned raptors and other birds, most of which are harmed by their proximity to the New York metropolis.

2012 Grantees

In 2012 The Binky Foundation continued to experience a major increase in grant applications. With our focus now primarily on the smaller First Steps grants, we have been able to help many more organizations that we have determined would bring long-term benefits to the grantee as opposed to simply helping with current operating expenses. Our criteria and information on our application windows for 2013 can be found on our Grant Program page.

First Step Grants

During 2012, First Steps grants of $2500 or less were awarded to a record 34 organizations in 17 states. These grants, listed below, largely reflect our mission and criteria as described on our Grant Program page:

Forward Steps Grants

Although The Binky Foundation is focused primarily on its First Steps grant program, it also provided support in 2012 for a few new larger Forward Steps programs that our grant committee determined would provide long-term, valuable benefits for animals or habitat, including:

The Binky Foundation also continues to provide ongoing support for several “old friends”—organizations that provide significant and important services to animals—domestic and wild—and their habitat, including grants to:

  • Unexpected Wildlife Refuge, a small refuge in Southern New Jersey providing a haven for beavers, other indigenous wildlife and migratory birds, protecting them from encroachments of farmers, hunters and civilized development.
  • The Raptor Trust, an organization in Central New Jersey providing for the rehabilitation and re-entry in to the wild of injured or orphaned raptors and other birds, most of which are harmed by their proximity to the New York metropolis.
  • The Environmental Law & Policy Center in Chicago, Illinois, in support of its Wildlife Habitat Protection Initiative and an environmental law fellowship.

2011 Grantees

The Binky Foundation experienced a two-fold increase in grant applications in 2011. With resources limited we focused first on the smaller First Steps grants, particularly those that we determined would bring long-term benefits to the grantee as opposed to simply helping with current operating expenses. We have posted our revised criteria and information on our new application windows commencing in 2012 because of the large number of requests for funding (see our Grant Program page.)

First Step Grants

During 2011, First Steps grants of $2500 or less were awarded to 20 organizations in 11 states. These grants largely reflecting our revised criteria, and we were also pleased to be able to include grants to organizations helping some of our underserved animal friends, including rabbits and turtles. Here is a list of our 2011 First Steps grantees:

Forward Steps Grants

The Binky Foundation also provided support in 2011 for a few new larger Forward Steps programs that our grant committee determined would provide long-term, valuable benefits for animals or habitat, including:

  • Contributing toward the acquisition of needed equipment for the veterinary facility of a wild cat sanctuary in Oregon (WildCat Haven Sanctuary)
  • Helping purchase much needed equipment for the long-term development of a spay/neuter clinic and infirmary in Iowa (C & W Rustic Hollow Shelter, Inc.)
  • Funding for the purchase of walk-through gates for a repeat applicant, a horse rescue facility in Washington State (Wind Haven Horse Rescue)
  • Funding for another repeat applicant for the purchase of much needed equipment for an on-sight hospital for the treatment of injured or ill wildcats in New Mexico (The Wildcat Sanctuary)
  • Ongoing support for an environmental law fellowship, The Environmental Law & Policy Center, dedicated to wildlife protection, particularly for its Wildlife Habitat Protection Initiative in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin.

The Binky Foundation also continues to provide ongoing support for several “old friends”—organizations that provide significant and important services to animals—domestic and wild—and their habitat, including grants to:

  • A small refuge in Southern New Jersey providing a haven for beavers, other indigenous wildlife and migratory birds, protecting them from encroachments of farmers, hunters and civilized development. (Unexpected Wildlife Refuge)
  • An organization in Central New Jersey providing for the rehabilitation and re-entry in to the wild of injured or orphaned raptors and other birds, most of which are harmed by their proximity to the New York metropolis. (The Raptor Trust)
  • A nationally and internationally known animal sanctuary in support of its educational programs (Best Friends Animal Society)

2010 Grantees

First Step Grants

During 2010, The Binky Foundation awarded First Steps grants of $2500 or less to 19 organizations and one individual in 13 states. These awards include support for local animal rescue and humane facilities to help establish or maintain animal welfare programs, including food pantries for rescued animals, hay banks and nutritional programs for equines, medical care, spay and neuter programs, and other related animal welfare services. These grantees include:

Forward Steps Grants

We also provided support in 2010 for a few new larger Forward Steps programs that our grant committee determined would provide long-term, valuable benefits for animals or habitat, including:

  • Contributing toward the acquisition of new radiology equipment for a wildlife center in Illinois (Willowbrook Wildlife Center)
  • Helping purchase a badly needed horse trailer for transporting rescued equines in Washington State (Wind Haven Horse Rescue)
  • Funding for a new, progressive educational program about living with and understanding animals (The Kerulos Center, in Oregon)

The Binky Foundation also continues to provide ongoing support for a number of organizations that provide significant and important services to animals and their habitat, including grants to:

  • A small refuge in Southern New Jersey providing a haven for beavers, other indigenous wildlife and migratory birds, protecting them from encroachments of farmers, hunters and civilized development. (Unexpected Wildlife Refuge)
  • An organization in Central New Jersey providing for the rehabilitation and re-entry in to the wild of injured or orphaned raptors and other birds, most of which are harmed by their proximity to the New York metropolis. (The Raptor Trust)
  • Provide educational internships through conservation groups with compatible goals and excellent educational track records. (Alaska Conservation Foundation)
  • Support an environmental law fellowship dedicated to wildlife protection initiatives in the Midwest (Environmental Law & Policy Center)
  • A nationally and internationally known animal sanctuary in support of its educational programs (Best Friends Animal Society)
